Tumpeng; A Traditional Javanese Food for Celebration


Nasi Tumpeng

Tumpeng is a traditional Javanese food which commonly used for celebrations. Tumpeng is also made from rice and rice can be white or yellow, depending on need. Its shape is a cone, that's why it's called tumpeng or nasi tumpeng.

It's seen from the picture on the left that for making tumpeng, we need rice and shape it like a cone. To beautify tumpeng itself, we can use various dishes to be placed in the surroundings. Examples are fried tofu, fried noodle, boiled egg, gudangan (green vegetables), fried tempeh, kering (stir-fried tempeh), cucumber, tomato, carrot, and so on. Meanwhile, as a place for presentation, tumpeng usually uses tampah (a place for presentation which is made from weaved bamboo) which is coated by banana leaf.

For several celebrations, tumpeng is used to enliven the event. Besides, it's part of a tradition that has to be served at certain celebrations. It can be called too as part of the culture of Java, Indonesia.

This picture is an example of tumpeng that is used for celebrating Indonesia's independence on August 17th. As it's seen that there is a flag on the top of rice/ nasi tumpeng. The red-white flag is a symbol of the Indonesian flag. That's why it's placed on top of rice.

Thankful is described in rice and dishes surrounding. How rich Java, Indonesia is shown on various dishes that can be served in place of presentation. That's shown us that those are commonly Javanese eat daily. For main food is rice.

Java is famous inland and mentioned as a paradise island. It is because of natural resources and fertile soil. How various dishes can be seen in the picture has clearly enough to understand that Java is rich.

Every dish on tumpeng has meaning too. Such as rice as the main food of Java, egg as a livestock product, vegetables, and so on.

Besides celebrating Indonesia's independence, tumpeng is used for other celebrations or events. Such as welcoming guests from outside, celebrating a birthday party, and so on.

It's quite easy to enjoy this food, nasi tumpeng. Just use your hand to replace a spoon. It's traditional manner too in Java and it is much more enjoyable when you use your hand to eat. However, don't forget to wash your hand first before enjoying the dish.
