Assalamu'alaikum

Greeting

Assalamu'alaikum, written in Arabic أسلام عليكم is a greeting of Muslim people. When they meet one to other they will greet by saying 'Assalamu'alaikum' and replied by 'Wa'alaikumsalam'. It's a beautiful greeting for Muslim in the world.

Assalamu'alaikum is not only greeting for Muslims but also a prayer for each other. The meaning of Assalamu'alaikum itself is may peace be upon you, then it will be answered by other with wa'alaikumsalam, means and you too. By this greeting and the meaning inside Muslim people will greet and pray for goodness for each other.

However, it will be different when 'Assalamu'alaikum' is saying outside of Islam, Non-Muslim or infidel. When this greeting is saying by outside of Islam to the Muslim, Muslim will reply by 'Wa'alaikum'. It's not allowed to reply such as fellow Muslims. It because a believe where Muslim only believe in one God, Allah but not for outside of Islam.

Exclusive greeting comes from here where this greeting such as identity of who you are. It has to be remembered that it's not kind of tolerance when people outside of Islam use this as greeting. It is enough to explain of how Muslims answer for this greeting to fellow Muslims and people outside of Islam.

It is a simple way to say good morning or selamat pagi in Indonesia to greet when you don't know of what her/his religion is.

Don't make it such as problem too because it has became part of Muslim culture to pray goodness for each other everywhere, every time, even it is through the greeting of 'Asslamu'alaikum'.
